Dr. Bonakdar Explains: This amazing before and after photo is a great example of muscle recruitment that happens in large muscles after a Botox treatment. The platysma muscle is a vertical neck muscle that spans between the jaw line and the clavicle. It pulls down on the on the lower face and contributes to jowling. The before photo shows muscle contraction of the platysma with grimacing. By contracting this muscle, the 2 main neck cords of the platysma were identified. Each cord was injected with 20 units of Botox Cosmetic. The after photo with same force of grimacing shows less jowling, the cords that were injected are absent, but two new cords have become apparent due to muscle recruitment. Some may ask, why were these new cords not addressed preventatively? There is a limit to how many units can be safely injected in the neck at the same time. My comfort zone is 40-50 units. These recruited muscles are being addressed with a second Botox treatment and results will be posted.
